Big Problems Need Huge Solutions

Our heart goes out to the people affected by the unfortunate events surrounding 38 Studios and its subsidiary in Baltimore, Big Huge Games.  Through it all, the team stayed together in a way that’s been really heartwarming to see.  The team kept working, hoping that there’d be a way to secure last-minute funding and save the company.  People brought extra food into the office to help those unable to pay their bills.  And last week, in bittersweet irony, Big Huge Games was named to Game Developer’s Top 30 studios in the world list.

You may be wondering why I’m writing all this – and it’s because Epic is going to do something to help them, and we want people to understand why we think it’s the right thing to do.

On Wednesday, the ex-BHG leadership team contacted us.  They wanted to start a new company and keep together some of the key talent displaced by the layoff, and hoped that they could use an Epic IP as a starting point for a new game.  We loved that they all wanted to keep working together, but it was pretty clear they’d have trouble building a demo and securing funding before their personal savings ran out.

In one of life’s coincidences, Epic’s directors had spent the morning discussing how we’d love to build even more successful projects with our growing team, but that we’d need a dramatic infusion of top talent to do so.  Which, we all knew, was impossible.

So now we’re planning to start an impossible studio in Baltimore.  :)

It’ll take a while to find space, set up desks and PCs, purchase sufficient Nerf weaponry and Dr. Pepper, etc.  But some of these folks have been going too long without a paycheck to wait for that.  So, as soon as we can, we’re going to try to get people working down here at Epic headquarters in Cary, NC as contractors.

There’s a million things to work out.  How many of the team can we hire?  What will it be called?  What will they be working on?  We don’t know all the answers yet.  Please give us some time to figure it out; we hope to have more to share soon.

The way we see it, there’s been a big storm in Baltimore, and we’re taking in a few of the refugees — as are the awesome folks at Zynga East, Zenimax Online, and other southeastern studios.  Epic’s in a situation where we can do this, and it very clearly fits with our company values, so we’re going to give it a whirl.

      Epic truly is one of the best game developers in the world. Not only do they pump out superb games, they’re all brilliant people, even people higher up in the company. Brings a smile to my face to know not all game companies think of money and little else.

      BRAVO EPIC!!!  😀  As a game developer this strikes close to home and I have good friends that were effected by the unfortunate events.  I always have seen Epic as a pillar in game development from the days of Unreal and Unreal Tournament and still to this day, you are tops.  This just solidifies what a great company/studio you are.  Again this is an awesome gesture of good in a big way.

      This is amazing news.  There are so many awesome people out there showing support for the BHG/38 Studios family.  As a former member of the QA team at Big Huge, I speak from experience: that place was closer to having a second family than another day at “the job.” Thanks Dr. Capps and Epic Games, for giving at least some of those people a chance to keep doing what they do best!

      Dr. Michael Capps, how about all the folks who have been laid-off in the Raleigh area in the last couple of years (Atomic, Vicious Cycle, EA, Redstorm to name a few)?  Instead you Epic blows off these qualified people saying that you only hire the cream of the crop and people who have a crazy amount of experience doing AAA 3rd person shooters.  Then you bring in people from outside the state.  Let’s call this what it is, a good business opportunity for Epic Games and save the “oh we care for the videogame community” for when you can actually do the “right” thing in your own backyard.

        Figures that someone has to come in here and post something negative with a good story.  What you’re pointing out is pretty clear to most people.  Of course it can benefit Epic in some fashion, they’re not trying to dismiss that.  What they are saying is that they’re stepping up to help other people as well so it’s a win-win for both.  If you can’t see that, you’re more illiterate than your post already shows.

        BHG IS cream of the crop. Have you never heard of Rise of Nations? That’s one of THE best RTS games ever made. I don’t recall BHG ever making a AAA 3rd person shooter, though.

      Man…when I got laid off and was looking for work just over a year ago, Epic wouldn’t give me the time of day even though I was very qualified. I guess I should have been part of a whole studio shut down. Sorry to sound harsh, but the reality is hundreds of people get laid off in the game industry each year. Yeah, this specific situation was messed up because the head of BHG was a moron, but I’ve worked at game studios where a third of the staff was laid off because the people in charge were morons, and I never got a hand out.

      @b0bb647a502b5bbb8f1b62b737f019e6:disqus  Getting into Epic Games has always been like trying to break into Fort Knox – the company sets their own standards and they have a right to do so.  I concur it is super frustrating to be a laid-off developer and have the door shut in my face by Epic.  I suffered through 2 years of unemployment before finding work again.  These guys at BHG are extremely fortunate that not only do they avoid that, they will get picked up by one of the best companies in the business.

      I’m happy for them and wish them well.  As for Epic, it’s their right to choose what they do with their resources, and this is indeed a generous move.  I just wish they would not paint themselves as “saviors” or “benefactors” because in the end they are simply a corporation doing business.  But really really epic business :-)

      As someone who has followed 38S from the very beginning (indeed, the very VERY beginning) and as someone who has huge amounts of respect for those who have been involved in the company (and then, with BHG), I couldn’t be happier for them.

      Epic, what you are doing for the 38ers and big huge shows what kind of people are running your company. That said i am very intrested in knowing if epic with its new employes from the the former 38 studoes and big huge games, are going to try to perches the ip for KOA games from the state of RI to continue DLC for reckoning. I would love to see project capernicus finished. For a first time around game KOA:R did sell 1.2 million copies state side. There is a market for this type of game. I also understand your studieo is not going to give RI the defect amount owed to aquire the rights to the IP KOA. If the price was right im sure there are many people that would love to see these stories by R.A. Salvatore brought to life by the great people at 38 and big huge games continued. These people put countless hours into creating this world and it would be a shame to let it all going to waist.

      I love 38 studios koa to me was the best game to date and it is 8/7/2012 atm and no game can even come close to koa. Koa was so long so much fun it put tears in my eye from playing it not tears of rage orpitty but teats of love for the game. Every time i play koa i play for atleast 2 hours to most of 8 hr.
