Gears of War: Judgment MAXIM DLC – “Dreadnought” Available soon!

dreadnought_action_shotOn May 14th, you’ll be able to download the second MAXIM Map, Dreadnought, available for OverRun players free of charge for a limited time.

In the months immediately following Emergence Day, the COG managed to capture some Locust Berserkers.  Thinking that a ship at sea would be safe from an underground enemy, the COG decided to transport their prize to a secure research facility via the CNV Pomeroy. Little did they know that the Locust had waterborne beasts from the underground rivers of the Hollow, or that the Locust soldiers would use them so relentlessly to rescue the captured Berserkers.  The Pomeroy was corralled into a narrow channel and forced ashore, where the Locust sent a mass of troops to assault and overwhelm the beached vessel.

Coming soon: You can also catch a fly-through video via the MAXIM app on Xbox LIVE!

Gears of War Cosplayer Studio Visit

Gears of War Cosplayer GroupSome of our biggest fans traveled hours to celebrate the launch of Gears of War: Judgment with us on March 18th.  They brought with them an arsenal of amazing hand made COG armor which they proudly wore for a tour of the Epic Games studio.

Along the tour the costuming group had the opportunity to meet Art Director Chris Perna, Assistant Producer Andy Bayle, and CEO Tim Sweeney who were truly impressed by their costuming talent and honored to have them visit.

Among the costumers were Brian Mead and his wife Robin as the ultimate Gears of War couple, Marcus and Anya.  Dale Harvey wore his incredible golden Palace Guard armor while George Lampard and his friend Cruz Cockman represented the Carmine brothers.  Miranda Dombroski was all armored up in her own original female COG design made with real steel plates!  The group was kind enough to share their passion for creating these costumes in the video below:

After the tour the group joined the Epic Games team for a few of the local midnight launches for Judgment.  Having them along made the events even more fun and it was very exciting to meet such creative Gears fans!  Check out more great photos below.

Epic to Host GDC Drop-In Hours, Oculus to Release Custom UDK

It’s one of our favorite times of year: The annual Game Developers Conference has kicked off, and we have loads of news for everyone this week.

Drop In, Come See Us!

Unreal Engine 4 on IGNDuring each day of the GDC exposition (Wednesday, March 27, through Friday, March 29), Epic is hosting dedicated drop-in hours from 10 – 11 a.m. PDT at our booth in the business center, North #BS322.

These time slots are specifically designed for independent developers and teams who haven’t already secured an appointment to stop by and chat with one of our dedicated territory managers about any questions regarding Unreal Engine technology.

GDC attendees who show up for drop-in hours will be entered into daily raffles for state-of-the-art NVIDIA GTX TITAN graphics cards, which are virtually and physically flying off shelves.

We encourage folks to check out NVIDIA’s booth, South #1602, which is showcasing Epic’s very own Samaritan and Elemental demo content along with a sneak peek at what we’re presenting behind closed doors this year. The entire GeForce wall highlights the progression of our next-gen technology! As a heads up, NVIDIA will have a special reveal from us at their booth on Friday starting at the opening of the expo and running throughout the day.

The Future of VR Is Unreal!

oculus-rift-prototype_800.0_cinema_640.0Today we announced that Oculus VR will release a custom version of the Unreal Development Kit (UDK), the free edition of Unreal Engine 3 (UE3). The special UDK release will ship during the first week of April, giving all Oculus developers award-winning Unreal Engine tools for day one support, right out of the box.

In addition, as Oculus is now a member of Epic’s premier UE3 Integrated Partners Program (IPP), we are providing UE3 full source licensees with the Oculus integration code at no extra charge.

Oculus is showcasing two fantastic Unreal Engine demonstrations at GDC this week as well. The first is Hawken, the incredible mech shooter from Adhesive Games, who started out building their game and easily upgraded to a full source UE3 license. The second awesome VR experience that must be seen to be believed is Epic Citadel – our expanded snowy version as demonstrated by Oculus on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

There’s never been a better time to be an Unreal Engine developer. We’ll have more to share with everyone soon throughout the week. Stay tuned and be sure to follow @UnrealEngine!

The Gears of War: Judgment Reviews are Coming in Hot!

GOW Judgment_Horiz_32x18_FINAL_rgbThe reviews for Gears of War: Judgment are coming in and we’ve been receiving a ton of positive feedback.

IGN’s Mitch Dyer says, “Gears of War: Judgment is a fantastic prequel with superb combat, fun multiplayer, and a meaningful story,” and “Intelligent level layouts have an intrinsic connection to Judgment’s new semi-random enemy spawn system, which keeps battles feeling fresh.” IGN gives Gears of War: Judgment a 9.2 out of 10. You can read more of this review at IGN.

David Hinkle from Joystiq gives Judgment 4 1/2 stars out of 5 and says, “A diligent approach to ensuring that no two encounters are the same keeps it from ever feeling stagnant or like a waste of your time. You’re always moving, constantly pushing through the next enemy stronghold, never sure of what you’ll face, and it’s always harrowing.

Bringing People Can Fly in was a good choice, because the developer has managed to make fighting the Locust feel dangerous and new again, despite this being my fourth trip to Sera.” Read more HERE.

Destructoid’s Jim Sterling gives a nod to the new modes and campaign in Gears of War: Judgment and says, “Ultimately, however, they work surprisingly well, keeping Gears fresh and familiar all at once.” Jim gave the game a 9/10. You can check out Jim’s full review over at Destructoid.
