Escapist Expo Recap!

Future of the Shooter Panel at Escapist ExpoLast weekend the Epic Games crew attended the inaugural Escapist Expo in Durham, NC.  As a part of our gold sponsorship of the event, fans were able to register for the 4 v 4 Gears of War 3 tournament for free on Saturday.  We also had Multiplayer Designer Quinn DelHoyo and Lead Level Designer Jim Brown on hand to emcee the event and meet fans.

Also on Saturday Quinn and Jim shared their thoughts about the shooter genre on the “Future of the Shooter” panel along with developers from Insomniac Games and Red Storm.  The panelists shared some really interesting thoughts about shooters using virtual reality-type technology in the future or incorporating other genres to include all types of players.

Epic Games playing against the fans at Escapist ExpoPrior to the tournament Quinn, Jim, QA Testers Brian Roberts and Donald White all faced off as a team against players that wanted to try their hand at beating the Gears 3 developers.  There was also an autograph signing with the Epic Games team and fans were treated to Gears of War: Judgment posters and Fortnite Durrrburger hats.  There were lots of great Gears of War cosplayers at the event as well including an Anya Stroud, Sam Byrne, Marcus Fenix and Onyx Guard.

Operation Supply Drop: Crimson Omen

Steven Machuga Operation Supply Drop Crimson OmenFor nearly two years, retired Captain Stephen “Shanghai Six” Machuga has been putting together care packages for U.S. troops deployed in Afghanistan.  He spent a total of two calendar years deployed overseas with the 82nd Airborne Division and 2nd Infantry Division to 13 straight months in Iraq.  In that time, he learned what an impact good care packages can have on morale for the troops overseas.  As a gamer himself, Stephen realized that video games are a popular item to see in a care package and an excellent way for us to give back to the troops.  Therefore, Operation Supply Drop, his charity, focuses on video game care packages from various game development studios as well as donations from the public.

The care packages are such a success that Steve reached out to us with the idea of a Gears-themed care package.  The care package is called “Crimson Omen” and Steve is looking to raise additional funds to help make it extra special.

You can get more information about Operation Crimson Omen here as well as have the opportunity to donate to support the wishlist items for the soldiers!  Below are some photos of a past care package that Epic Games donated to as well.

Epic Gamer Brittality’s Gears 3 Tips

Brittality Gears of War 3 Pro Gamer“Personal trainer by day, and Gear Head all the time,” Brittality is a pro-gamer who enjoys sharing her tips and experiences with Gears of War in videos posted to her YouTube channel.  Brit always adds her humor and personality to the videos, making them both informative as well as entertaining.

Brittality has been a Gears of War fan since the very beginning, stating, “The game’s movement, graphics and fast-paced environment absorbed me and quickly became an obsession.  From the time I first held that green “A” to roadie run, my heart morphed into the shape of a Gear COG.”  She’s been playing video games since she was very young as a hobby, but Gears of War changed everything about the way she played games.  “In late 2007, I began playing competitively on a small scale in order to quench my thirst for competition.  Now I am traveling to tournaments and living my dream of not only playing Gears of War 3, but meeting other Gear Heads along the way.”

In this video Brit shares tips on how to effectively provide continuous fire with the Lancer. This includes following player momentum, providing a distraction and/or cover fire and capitalizing on what she calls “peek-a-boo attacks”.

In another of her Gears 101 videos she shares tips to give player’s the edge in a King of the Hill match:

Project Triforce, the creators of some amazing Gears of War weapon replicas, sponsors Brittality to compete in Gears of War 3 tournaments. “I still can’t believe I get to go around to tournaments kicking butt in their name.  I am very fortunate to have these guys on my side,” Brittality states.  She recently made this video to show us how she trains for the COG Vengeance tournament this Saturday, May 16th:

“As far as making videos go,  it’s very fun for me and a useful creative outlet, sure.  But I also use it to connect to other people who share my love for Gears.  My goals for my videos is to not only learn more about the game and help newcomers settle in to the franchise, but first and foremost to make people laugh and have fun.  I hope my love for Gears projects through the videos and I hope I can inspire others to love it as much as I do.”  We found Brittality’s videos to be very helpful and creative. Thank you to Brit for sharing them with us!
