Why did I get a pop-up saying "Authorization Pending" when launching Rockstar Games?

When launching Rockstar games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 or Grand Theft Auto V, you may get a pop-up message similar to the one below:

Authorization Pending - Awaiting authorization from the Epic Games Launcher. This process can take up to 5 minutes. If this error persists, please verify you have completed the account linking and authorization process through the Epic Games Launcher.

If the game doesn't launch after this message disappears:

1. Exit your Epic Games Launcher.
2. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache.
3. Switch to a public DNS to strengthen your connection.
4. Run the Epic Games Launcher as an Administrator 
5. Attempt to relaunch the game.
