Why is SMS 2FA Not Available in My Country?

Beginning August 31, players in the following countries will no longer be able to use SMS (text messages sent to a mobile phone number) as a two-factor authentication (2FA) method — the second verification step required when signing in to your Epic Games account:

  • Sri Lanka

  • Malaysia

  • Mexico

  • Azerbaijan

  • Senegal

  • Republic of Niger

  • Russia (disabled in January 2026)

We disable SMS in regions where we see high rates of SMS abuse.

If you are in one of these countries and SMS is your primary 2FA method, you can select a different method, such as the Epic Authenticator, by following the steps below. If no action is taken before August 31, Epic will automatically use your email address to send future 2FA requests.

How to Set Up a New 2FA Method

  1. Go to the Password and Security (Opens in a new tab) section of your Epic Games account. You can find this by signing in at epicgames.com, clicking your profile icon in the top-right corner, and selecting Account > Password & Security.

  2. Under Two-Factor Authentication, click Set up next to the method you want to use.

  3. Enter the one-time verification code — either emailed to your account email address, or generated by your authenticator app (such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator).

  4. Your account will confirm the method is active and send you a confirmation email.

  5. If you use more than one 2FA method, set your preferred one as default by clicking the three dots (…) next to it and selecting Make my primary 2FA method.
