Epic Parties FAQ

What is Epic Party?

Epic Party is how you group up with friends to talk and play together across the Epic Ecosystem. Your party isn't tied to one game or one device. You can start a party in the Epic Games Launcher, keep talking as you load into Fortnite, and stay connected from the Epic Games app on your phone.

Epic Party provides you with:

  • Voice chat that isn't tied to a game session

  • Text chat with the members of your party

  • A way to jump into a game together: in Fortnite, everyone in your party joins a single shared lobby

All party communication is subject to our Community Rules (Opens in a new tab).

Where can I use Epic Parties?

You can invite your friends, join friends’ parties or start a new party from group chats on:

  • Fortnite

  • The Epic Games Launcher on PC

  • The Epic Games app

  • The Epic Games Store Mobile App

Who can be in my party?

Anyone in your party can invite their own friends, so you can end up in a party with friends of friends.

Who you can actually hear and speak to in that party is controlled by your own voice and text chat settings, parental controls or platform settings.

What is Party Joinability setting?

Party Joinability controls whether your friends can drop into your party on their own, or whether they need an invite first. It's a single toggle in your party UI with two settings:

  • Joinable: your party is open for your friends to join.

  • Invite Only: your party is private. Friends need an invite, or need to ask to join, before they can get in.

To change your party joinability setting, use the toggle in your party controls in the social tab. Your choice will be saved as your account preference, so it follows you across Fortnite, the Epic Games Launcher, the Epic Games app, and the Epic Games Store.

Why did my Party Joinability setting change on its own?

While you're in someone else's party, that party's joinability applies to everyone in it. If your setting is Invite Only and you join a friend's open party, you're in an open party for as long as you're there. When you leave, you go back to your own last chosen setting.

Your personal preference is only ever changed by you. Another player's settings, or a party you joined, never overwrite it. If you change the toggle yourself while you're in a party, that does become your new personal setting.

Is Party Joinability different for players under 18?

Yes. For accounts under 18 and for cabined accounts, Party Joinability starts as Invite Only when the account is set up, so no one can join without being invited.

Players under 18 can change this to Friends later if they want to.

If you're a parent, you can manage your child's communication permissions by logging into the Epic Account Portal (Opens in a new tab) and using Epic's Parental Controls (Opens in a new tab).

What tools do I have to manage my party?

You have several options, and you can use more than one:

Tool

What it does

Mute

Stops you from hearing one specific person. They stay in the party.

Deafen

Silences all party voice coming to your device.

Block

Ends your friendship and cuts off all communication with that player. Blocking doesn’t remove you or a blocked player from a party. It is about cutting the connection between you two, not removing them from the group. Only Party Leaders can kick others from the party.

Report Chat

Sends the voice chat audio  in reportable voice chat or the last 50 from reportable text chat to Epic for review.

Leave

You can leave any party at any time, from any surface.

You can also block or unblock players outside of an Epic Party. See How do I block or unblock a player in Fortnite? and Block and unblock a friend in the Epic Games Launcher.

How do I report inappropriate conduct in Epic Party voice chat?

You can report party voice chat when there's eligible recorded audio in the conversation. If there is, you'll be able to attach that audio to your report so Epic moderators can review what was actually said.

Party voice chat is recorded when:

  • Anyone in the party is under 18, or

  • Anyone in the party 18 or over has their voice reporting preference set to Always On

Audio is captured on your own device: your console, PC, or phone, not on Epic's servers, and it's only sent to Epic if someone submits a report.

If there's no eligible recorded audio in your party, you can still report the player, mute them, and block them, you just won't be able to attach audio evidence.

Why do I show as Away instead of Offline when Fortnite and my mobile apps are closed?

If you have Fortnite, Epic Games Store or Epic Games mobile apps on your phone with social notifications turned on, your friends will see you as Away when the game and the app are closed, rather than Offline. Away means you aren't active right now, but we can still send you a party invite push notification.

While you're Away, friends can invite you to a party and you'll get a notification. They can't join your party directly. The join option isn't shown for players who are Away, whatever your Party Joinability setting is.

If you'd rather show as Offline when the app is closed, turn off invitation notifications for the Epic Games app.
