Run Windows System File Checker
When issues persist despite all troubleshooting, it can be an indication that there is a problem with the hard drive. Like all machinery hard drives can wear down with use. Microsoft Windows comes with tools to check your drive for errors and potentially fix them.
To check the files on a disk, check out the Microsoft article: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
To check a hard drive for errors, do the following:
- Click the Start icon (Windows icon) at the bottom of the screen
- Type: cmd
- Right-click Command Prompt
- Select Run As Administrator
- Type: chkdsk c: /r /f
Note: You can run this command for any hard drive by replacing c: with d:, e:, etc. - Press the Y key
- Press the Enter key
The drive will be checked for physical errors - Restart your computer
