How to sync instrument controllers on Xbox One for Rock Band 4
Sync Rock Band 4 instruments
- Turn on your Xbox One.
- Insert fresh batteries into your Rock Band 4 instrument controller.
- Press and hold the Xbox button on the instrument.
- Drums: Center of the drum kit
- Guitar: Next to the d-pad
- Wait for the white light to blink slowly. This means the controller is ready to sync.
- Press and hold the sync button on your Xbox One, then press and hold the wireless button on the instrument for up to two seconds.
- Drums: Black button on the bottom-left of the main unit
- Guitar: White button near the amp plug
- Watch the light on the instrument:
- Flashing quickly: syncing in progress
- Solid light: successfully synced
- If the light keeps blinking slowly, repeat step 5.

Sync older instrument controllers
Check the Rock Band 4 instrument compatibility chart (Opens in a new tab) to confirm your controller is supported. You must use the Legacy Game Controller Adapter.
- Turn on your Xbox One.
- Connect the Legacy Game Controller Adapter to your console.
- Insert fresh batteries into your controller.
- Press and hold the Xbox 360 button on the controller.
- Wait for the green light to blink slowly.
- Press and hold the sync button on the adapter, then press and hold the wireless button on the controller for up to two seconds.
- Watch the light on the controller:
- Rotating light: syncing in progress
- Solid green light: successfully synced (indicates player number)
- If the light keeps blinking, repeat step 6.
- Press the Start button to join the game.
Note: The Legacy Game Controller Adapter uses a single profile. All players share one Gamertag, and only the first player’s scores are tracked.
