Technical Product Manager - Fraud (R23448)

Bandcamp is an online record store and music community where passionate fans discover, connect with, and directly support the artists they love. Artists have earned more than a billion dollars on Bandcamp. We believe that music is an indispensable part of the culture, and for that culture to survive, artists must be compensated fairly and transparently for their work.

Our team of 100+ people is sprinkled throughout the world, united in our desire to help artists connect with their fans and earn a living from their craft. Many of us are musicians, all of us are fans, and we see how our work helps artists every day. We use one guiding principle to decide what to build, write about, design, and support: will this help an artist connect with fans and put money in the artist’s pocket?

What You'll Do

Bandcamp is seeking an experienced technical product manager to join our resolute Fraud team. With your background in ecommerce abuse mitigation, you'll help us develop powerful, practical solutions for keeping our marketplace safe and trustworthy. We think very carefully about how our interventions might affect real artists and fans, and pride ourselves on designing solutions that are highly selective and largely invisible. Our work is allied with that of virtually all other teams, working closely and frequently together to identify, mitigate, and anticipate an ever-evolving panoply of threats. We, like you, are sympathetic communicators and voracious analysts, and delight in solving real-world puzzles with creativity, thoroughness, and care.

In this role, you will:

  • Work with the Fraud team to identify, analyze, and improve our understanding of attempts to engage in fraud on Bandcamp.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other members of the team to develop and recommend strategies that reduce and minimize the risks posed by that activity.
  • Write clear and compelling product briefs and specifications that describe what solutions are being proposed, and why we think they are appropriate and necessary.
  • Help weigh the tradeoffs between scope, time, and risk for each proposed initiative, and accordingly help prioritize the Fraud team’s work in general.
  • Work closely with other product managers at Bandcamp to understand their teams’ roadmaps, to identify risks, and to help prevent new threats from being introduced.
  • Partner with the Data and Support teams to monitor and measure the impact of our efforts.
  • Inspire and motivate others through the quality of your thinking and analysis.

What we’re looking for:

  • 3+ years experience working as an engineer or product manager on Payments, Anti-Fraud, Trust & Safety, Risk, or Abuse teams, ideally at a two-sided marketplace or ecommerce company.
  • A CS degree or the equivalent training in your previous jobs.
  • Familiarity with ecommerce APIs and web payment gateways, credit card systems, login security and identity management systems, and anti-spam and bot detection.
  • An understanding of, or better still, experience with security information & event management systems, as well as predictive models and other dynamic solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid quantitative and analytical abilities (e.g. knowledge of statistics, experience with SQL or similar tools, and the ability to conduct your own quantitative investigations).
  • The ability to stay cool under pressure, and a willingness to lend a hand during incident response (occasionally at odd hours)
  • Prior experience with Bandcamp as a fan or artist (or both), and an understanding of how our product works and what our community values.
