Epic Internships happen year round with work terms ranging from 3-4 months. We post roles well in advance of the intended start date, so check back often for updates. Each role will remain posted until we find a match.

Early Career Guide for Emerging Talent

The Early Career Guide is a roadmap for students, administrators, educators, and job seekers that covers the entry-level skills needed to begin their journey toward a career in gaming and interactive 3D. The learning content and recommendations provided in this guide are meant to serve as a helpful framework for beginners. We will curate recommended content that is accessible through Epic’s learning portal and make periodic updates as new resources become freely available.

This is not meant to be a comprehensive learning resource. Students are strongly encouraged to build upon their knowledge and curiosity of the industry and seek out additional external resources to help them advance in their career journey.

Those who go beyond the classroom through proactive learning, participating in community activities, and/or spending time on personal projects that inspire them, flourish during their time with us. We love to see candidates that challenge themselves in new ways to aid their own growth and development.

Learn

Unreal Engine is the fastest-growing skill requirement in real-time and 3D graphics. Browse online courses through our free learning platform providing hands-on video courses and guided learning paths.

Attend developer conferences, such as GDC. If you are not able to participate, many of the talks later become freely available and make excellent learning content.

Create Content

This could take the form of an independent or collaborative project with students or professionals as an opportunity to share knowledge and seek constructive feedback. It does not need to be a massive undertaking: a mini game or level, a prototype, a tool, a character, or a simple product tutorial can showcase your knowledge and help you gain experience.

Participate in Game Jams, either through major publicized events, local chapters, or even start your own with a group of friends. Epic MegaJam is one example in addition to the many you can find on sites like itch.io. You can also check out Unreal Engine’s Game Jam Tips and Tricks straight from Epic developers.

Enter competitions, such as The Rookie Awards for 3D Art. Explore what’s out there for your desired discipline. These do not need to be major events; even small student-led competitions are great opportunities for experience and exposure to learning new skills.

Network

Consider joining industry-focused organizations, student clubs, online communities, and/or Discord channels e.g. Unreal Slackers, IGDA, or WIGI.
Attend company events, such as career fairs and info-sessions.
Leverage social media platforms to share your work and make connections.

Eligibility

Who is eligible for an internship and do you accept new grads?

We focus on individuals beyond high school with less than 1 year of formal working experience. Experience in either tech or gaming industries is preferred and can range from undergrad, grad student, PhD, prior internships, as well as non-traditional higher education.

Both active students and recent graduates within 1 year of their graduation may be considered. For degree holders, enrollment in a continuing education program does not automatically render one eligible for our internship program. Epic has sole discretion to determine whether such enrollment is a qualifying eligibility event, taking into consideration all the individual circumstances.

Do you accept international students on an F-1 visa?

Eligibility varies per role but our dedicated immigration team will review each candidate on a case by case basis.

Where do you recruit from?

We partner extensively with universities and higher education programs, big and small, that contribute to the 3D graphics and gaming communities. While we are selective in the number of schools that we physically visit each year, we are not limited in our ability to develop remote partnerships and posting positions online. If you've got the right skills and a passion for the industry, we would love to work with you.

When should I apply?

In short, as soon as possible. Internship roles are competitive, and we fill them as soon as we find the best match. There are no official deadlines to apply, and since we hire year-round, here are some general recruitment windows to keep in mind:
For summer internships: September - March
For fall co-ops: May - August
For spring co-ops: September - December

What does the review process look like?

If we choose to move forward with your application the intern review process consists of a technical assessment in some cases, followed by a recruitment screening to learn more about you and your experience. You will then move on to a panel interview with the team.

How do I prepare for the interview process?

Learning about Epic is a great place to start! There are many ways to get to know our tools and products before you apply. Download Unreal Engine, check out content from recent releases, and get up to speed on the latest news in the industry. When you're ready to apply make sure your resume is up to date and showcases only the most relevant projects and experience for the role you've applied for. Ensure there's a clear understanding of your involvement in the projects listed, and be ready to talk in detail about anything you share on your resume.

I've applied and haven't heard back.

University recruiting seasons each span a few months. Please refer to our recruitment windows outlined above to get a sense of timelines and the best times to apply. We expect all intern candidates to receive final notice of their application status by the listed application deadlines. This will be March, August, and December for summer, fall, and spring internship terms respectively.
