    UT99 not working properly in Windows 10

    I have 3 computers that I recently upgraded to windows 10. UT99 ran great in windows 7, but I'm not having much luck in windows 10. Basically the game starts with a black background, then I see blue "precaching" and nothing else happens. I hear the background music, but no graphics. I tried all changing the graphics types from D3D to openGL, software, none will work. The only way I can get it to work is when I relaunch it, it gives the error that it did not run properly and give the open to run in safe mode. That actually will load and run, but is windowed and I can only get a max of 800X600 resolution. I thought that safe mode basically runs the software rendering so I dont' know why it wont run at least in software rendering. Can someone help me out? UT99 still rox and I want to be able to play it!
    Thanks

    99 just crashes for me at launch under Win 10. Haven't looked into why yet but it worked just fine under 8.1.

      Safe mode also disables quite a few things. But the main issue I guess is that all renderers attempt ot start the game fullscreen. There are a couple of options that you can try. First, look for StartupFullscreen=True line in the UnrealTournament.ini and set it to false. Second - look for an updated OpenGL or D3D renderer. You can find these here: http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/

          The latest renderers are actually being still developed at OldUnreal
          http://www.oldunreal.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?board=2 and not by Chris Dohnal.

          If you have an nVidia use the new OpenGL
          If you have ATI or intel use the new D3D9

          If you have done a clean Win10 install you may need to reinstall the DirextX9 files
          http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...ion.aspx?id=35

          You can change the renderer setting in the UT ini.
          [D3D9Drv.D3D9RenderDevice]
          UsePrecache=False

            I now have everything working Unreal GOTY '99 on Win10. I learned to follow the below steps for Windows 10

            http://www.kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/#supportedgames

            I used Unreal engine Direct3D 10 renderer
            1) Downloads
            The current version is v29. Download: d3d10drv-v29.zip. Install required DirectX update: dxwebsetup.exe. Install required VS2010 runtimes: vcredist_x86.exe.

            2) Installation and settings

            Unzip the files for the game you're playing to that game's 'system' directory. Examples of this are 'C:\Deus Ex\System' and 'D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Deus Ex\System'. You should end up with a 'd3d10drv.dll' file in said System directory, and a 'd3d10drv' subdirectory with various other files.
            Start the game, go into its video options, and click the the renderer selection button. The game should restart and allow the Direct3D 10 renderer to be picked (make sure to select "Show all devices").
            That should be all.

              Glad it worked out. The renderer was suggested in pretty much every thread you started on this topic and for anyone else having problems with Win10, that is usually the best place to start.

              For UT, the new XOpenGL found at OldUnreal may be the best bet. Supports the latest versions of OGL and brings a few things to the table other renderers don't.

                The only problem with that renderer though is that is not whitelisted in most servers running ACE.
                So if he wants to play online, he would be kicked from most servers if he used that one, unfortunately.

                If for purely offline play, then yeah, go for it.

                    So under windows 10 use d3d9 for ati or nvidia
                    (Opengl In the majority of cases a black screen is obtained )

                      Hi, what renderer for hd textures you recommend for playing online? i've tried dx10 and xopengl, both make me kicked from the most populated servers.
                      ---
                      Never mind, sorry for question. i've tested D3D9 renderer and it works with hd textures, as well for multiplayer.
                      The only problem with this renderer is, when you try switch to windowed mode from fullscreen mode, it crashes often.

                        May be you ave to set the windows size to a compatible one in the UnrealTournament.ini

                        [WinDrv.WindowsClient]
                        WindowedViewportX=958
                        WindowedViewportY=1008
                        FullscreenViewportX=1280
                        FullscreenViewportY=1024

                          D3D9, and OpenGL from the same author, can both be used to safely play online and are fairly stable.
                          They're not fully stable though, and will give some problems depending on the system and the settings of the renderer itself.
                          For instance, in Windows 7, in my case, it sometimes fails to even launch if I tweak some specific settings (I don't remember exactly which settings, but antialias at least seems to cause issues).
                          But other than that, it's a safe bet and back in my modding days I pushed it a lot more than I should due to the visual nature of the mods themselves, and it always held itself together without any problem.

                          In the meanwhile however (a few weeks ago), I upgraded to Windows 10 (along with the hardware), and I have not installed the game since so I don't know yet how stable D3D9 or the OpenGL renderers are.
                          They should play out pretty much the same, but Windows 10 has still a lot of problems as an OS even for recent stuff, so...

                          There are of course more recent renderers, but like I said above, many servers have ACE, and ACE only accepts a few known renderers to be used ("trusted" renderers), and it happens that the D3D10 and the latest OpenGL renderer from Smirftsch, have not been added so you are kicked (not banned) if you attempt to use any of these.
                          If you wish to use them, because they're more stable, you can try to reach out to the owners of those server to request them to add those renderers to ACE's whitelist, so they no longer kick you with them.
                          It's relatively easy to reach out to most of them, since if you search by the server name, you will end up in a site or forum of some sort in which you can register and post about this.
