If I could draw like that, this is how it my idea of a skaarj would be like.

I think the Skaarj was 2 heads taller (maybe more). Don't have GOTY installed, but I remember comparing humans to Skaarj years ago.

Also on Gooba's character: The thing that stands out the most too, is the color. That's the trick with the new characters of UT4, COLOR! Vibrant colors to make us feel warm. I love every other concept, especially the 3d models, but when you start "painting" take that in consideration

You're more than welcome to do a paintover with some of your ideas

Here's a PNG with transparency you can bring it into photoshop and try out some paintovers of armor, colors etc. I actually keep forgetting I'm not doing this as an assignment or for work - this is all of us just having fun so far. So I encourage you guys to jump in and make some stuff. Bravo to those who have joined in with models and drawings but the rest of you guys should really try some paintovers and sketches of your own. You might find it's harder than it looks but very rewarding and you'll get that much more of a voice and influence because of it.

            Ok! Let's make art!

Tempted to do a lambent version. Am I the only one who thinks it looks like a locust with tusks?

Yes please if you think there's a better direction to take it paint over or do different versions for what you want to see.

Actually, to expand a bit on the genders: there is quite a bit of variety in nature of how it works. Bees and ants have a queen that lays eggs, which then if fertilised become female workers and soldiers. They normally don't reproduce, because the queen alters their physiology like that. With ants, if the queen dies, newly developing ants become potential new queens, because they are no longer affected by the queen's suppressing chemicals. With bees, they always have some potential queens, who are given special food and develop in more spacious quarters, just in case something bad happens with the queen.

Eggs that are not fertilised become male drones. They are basically diplomatic envoys to other colonies, where they mate with those queens and renew the genetic code there. They are also part of the queen's escort if she decides to create a new colony. By themselves, drones don't do anything other than eat, do minor work (dances, thermoregulation) and mate, and they only live for a short time. If there are too many drones in a colony, they are often just expelled out to die (in order not to have to feed them; if they're lucky, they will find another, preferably new, colony in time).

Termites have it a bit differently. There is a queen and a king, both live long. Most new termites, the workers and soldiers, are male. A small number of newly developed termites are winged, and they are the backup material in case either the queen or the king dies. If they don't, they fly off to scout potential new colony sites, and once they find one, since they are both male and female, they can create new colonies on the spot. They also do the diplomatic relation thing.

Then there are variations of this. Some species don't have queens, some are parthenogenetic (all female) etc.

In a sense the termite variation sounds closest to what we see with the Skaarj. Warlords are obviously the male winged drones. So female Warlords would make sense too; they would drop their wings (or, more likely, hide and never use, because vertebrates use boned wings, and you can't easily drop those) and become queens on settling a new colony. Warlords being envoys across different clans makes sense as well. A male Skaarj King would also make sense.

The wide variety of Skaarj can be explained by specialisation (soldier/worker; although Prisoner 849 didn't really have a reason to face workers, so perhaps workers are even more different) and/or differences between clans. Another interesting bit is that some termite species have elite guardian soldiers that are up to three times as large as standard soldiers, but don't attack unless enemies intrude deep into the colony. Sounds like the giant Skaarj in RTNP Bounds of Foundry, no? I'd imagine that the Skaarj homeworld would have plenty of those in their key facilities.

Thinking about it, here's how I imagine the process on the Skaarj invasion on Na Pali went: first, one of the queens decided she wanted to expand her clan's realm. She sent several Warlords to scout the area in small ships. Seeing an untouched garden world with plenty of Tarydium, they reported back, and the queen formed an escort made of plenty of soldiers and several Warlords to fly to Na Pali. Upon landing, they started forming a colony around the mothership. They took advantage of the Nali, making them work in the mines for them (no need to use own workers!) and using their infrastructure (Warlords in Nali Castles, prospective places to create new colonies, not that much different from the mothership). Then Prisoner 849 came along, infiltrated the colony, killed the queen, left in one of the Skaarj shuttles. The hierarchy was in shambles, female warlords fighting among themselves for the control of what was left, soldiers not being sure who they should answer to (being males they can't themselves take the throne), some going with their favourite Warlords to establish new colonies separate fro the old one. Hence by RTNP, the Skaarj were still a threat, just not as organised, probably fighting among themseves more often than not (but P849's demise is obviously the priority). The Skaarj empire learned of their loss and sent lots of soldiers, as well as a colonisation ship, the UT2004 mothership (probably led by Warlords, not a queen, this time; too unsafe, too valuable to lose), to Earth. Defeated, they decided to focus their efforts elsewhere (humans didn't seem to be interested in taking Skaarj colonies, so might as well largely ignore one another, except for tournament matches to regain some of the lost honour).

So yea, food for thought. Would love to see a Skaarj King, female Warlord, and Skaarj workers

There is this too, I know I linked it in another thread but it has the Skaarj from UC2 and displays some possible personality to the characters. Its about 9:40 in the clip, unfortunately I dont think the resolution will be the best because it was made for the original Xbox.
Upon release, Unreal Tournament 2004 was met with widespread critical acclaim. Several critics praised the unique, fast-paced, fun and challenging nature of the game as its main selling points, while fans touted the post-release support and extensive modding capabilities.

Oh, but I really want to, if I could, I'd already be on my way creating sketchings and paintings (I'll leave the modeling up to guys like you, your skills are way beyond mine). But I'm in the middle of university exam period, so spending time drawing in a time like this would be quite irresponsible on my part. So if I'm going to participate, which I intend to, I'll only be able to chime in later on. The best thing I can do for now is sharing some quick thoughts and hopefully keep you guys encouraged to continue modeling in the process.

Revised the design a bit... since it wasn't supposed to look female, haha.

Made him look a bit more grim, added some more spikes and bigger neck etc...

The design reminds me a lot of Guardian from the original Unreal Tournament. Regardless of the gender, it still looks awesome and deserves to be in the final game. Same goes for TeriyakiStyle's work.

Hmm, still looks like a teenager Skaarj (and they're not supposed to have that phase). Something is still too sleek there. Skaarj are not supposed to be that good-looking!
