Clean & Sharp look and gameplay

What bugged me a lot was the processing in UT3, the clutter in maps and the lack of visibility because of effects. Priority to me is to keep the looks and gameplay sharp and straight to the point! Thats the core of Unreal Tournament, and in my opinion the reason it felt so good to play!

What can I do to help? I'm a real UT veteran, and this reboot has me insanely hyped up.

I agree that UT should not be "cluttered"
Of course you need a more modern approach to graphics but the non necessary detail such a junk on the floor and so forth needs to be in check in my opinion.
UT3 also suffered from detail overload in terms of post processing...clean and a little more simple is the way to go i think.

UT2004 had a nice balance between detail and "cleanness" I guess, can be more detailed ofcourse, just keep the floors straight and the walls out of the way.

I do agree that the game should have clean lines but I'd much prefer something along the lines of the infiltrator demo or even more so the shooter game demo released with UE4

Imo that would come at the cost of competitive play. Stuff just gets too distracting. Especially dark area's and such.

Ofcourse people will make classics juch as grendelkeep and campgrounds. I hope this build will give us the option to turn all post processing off! Call me boring, but i'm all for gameplay. I'd play the game if the walls were textureless.

I think they should just get rid of the gloom and dark atmosphere for the UT series, it was never a gloomy or dark shooter. Something a little more colorful with a wide variety of environments instead of consistent environments.

This is a more of a game design thread, guys.

As far as my opinion on this goes, they'll have to create an art-style that completely goes away with any sort of filters.

                I agree.

And it still can look very pretty nonetheless. Take a look at all the HOLP and low poly maps for Unreal Tournament 3, which offer beautiful visuals with low polygon count with some pretty textures or nice effects. I understand that Epic wants to make good use of their new engine for this, but "sharp and clean" is definitely what I always imagined how the next UT would look like.

Unreal Championship 2 did the visuals right, by the way. Lovely game. Too bad it was only for Xbox.

Is that so? Could a mod maybe move it in that case? I think it's important to discuss, as it will make or break the game for competitive play, just like it did with UT3.

I agree on your views of an artstyle.

This is one of the most important things for them to nail; if Epic goes with an overly realistic/detailed artstyle that requires tens of thousands of polygons (or more) for even basic objects and tons of unique textures then the mapping community will basically be killed before it even starts.

I absolutely agree with the art style in their ShooterGame demo:

The Mass Effect 1 style, basically. Clean, yet detailed.

Totally agree - I am preying that UE4 will allow for a clean, sharp texture without the odd, shiny look that UE3 gave (everything just looked like Gears of War).

Agreed, I think this looks nice. Modern level of detail, but still clean.

Or at least let us turn it off.
