    [CONCEPT ART] Deck 16 Concept

    Hey all,

My first proper post and I thought I'd start with a bang. I came up with a concept for my personal favorite map, Deck 16.
While Deck has always played great, you can tell it was designed in the early days of UT. The layout is very hard to apply to a realistic/believable scenario. So I tried to come up with a concept that would make the layout plausible, and highlight the maps inherent characteristics.

    The idea:
The ramps reminded me most of boarding ramps. So then it hit me, what if the entire map is a space hangar of sorts, left hand side (with the ramps leading in) is a spaceship 'parked' tightly against the boarding bay. Like a hostile takeover of sorts.
The entire left hand side of the map would be inside the ship, which would be clean, Nostromo (Alien) like, and the rest would be the old hangar, dark, moody and gritty.
Instead of green goop, we'd have a force field keeping out the open space surrounding the space hangar, but due to the harsh boarding of the ship, this force field has become unstable and one can fall through on repeated contact. The large square boxes could be replace with actual cargo from the hangar.

    Concept art:

To give this idea a visual push I drew some real quick concepts to hopefully get the idea across.

    Main open area:

    Elevator:

    Flak spawn (inside ship)

I can't wait to hear what you guys think of this idea!

    Awesome!
Good idea changing the Biohazard area into a Space Hangar, fits more with the actual UT4 style, besides, i like the art style, but.. i think the main open area it's a bit dark in, don't you think?

I prefer something more conservative, too much changes for my taste. Deck is an legendary map with special protection, shouldn't be changed much
Idea is cool at all, but on the images I can see so many shapes changed. It could have negative affect on gameplay.

I love the concept art, im sure it can be done in a way that visibility isnt impaired. I think the push for functionality is pretty sensible these days especially if you want to attract newer players, alot of younger people i know these days demand that sort of functionality in whatever they partake in, A friend of mine who is a younger gamer cant even watch a scifi movie in entirety if it doesnt display functionality, im sure not everyone is like this but it seems to be a growing trend

Loved the textures but I wouldn't change the design so much

as above, as a concept and a images it looks cool - but only as that form - its Deck - u gotta take the oldschool to a bit newschooler view - something fresh but not that fresh

That's looks fantastic Smollie. I could go for a Deck like that, a FRESH coat of paint. Put that on Chong Lee's version of Deck and that would be awesome.

The best Deck in the series is ut3's version. Gameplay is better than in original, and it looks awesome in the same time. This would be a good starting point.

I ALWAYS thought deck should be kind of a "deck" on a space ship, and your screenies look very very cool. But this game has a hard enough time with visual clarity as it is, and making a level as dark as that on purpose is a recipe for disaster.

I'm 100% for making it into a space theme, which this game is seriously lacking right now in a big way, but check out what chonglee was doing with deck8 before he mysteriously vanished a long time ago:

This has been the best vesion of deck I have played by far, both in visual clarity and gameplay as well. I'm not entirely sure what you might be able to take from it, but maybe opening up the ceiling with glass on top and a planet or a sun up there illuminating the level might be nice. In any case, try to emulate deck8 as much as you possibly can while keeping the space ship theme, because chonglee was doing an amazing job with it while he was still active.

And please, for the love of UT, DONT try and emulate ut3 deck. The gameplay was good, but it looked so dank and grungy and it was so **** hard to see anything....

Well, yes - visual clarity wasn't the best side of this map But gameplay was truly amazing, deck8 / CLee is also based on ut3 version.

I like the idea and theme, just be careful about wondering too far into UT3 territory of dark a gritty.

Deck meets Dead Space I'm down for it. Every map iteration doesn't have to be crystal clear or competitively balanced. Give me this level with some gross monsters, creepy music and scarce weapons.

I don't like chosen art direction. Having new space environment is great, but don't let it be that dark and gritty and overdetailed. My hope is we got over it after UT3.

The central room with bridges deserves something special. I was blown away by this old concept:
                          https://www.epicgames.com/unrealtour...l=1#post166551
I imagine you could go with transparent roof with fantastic skybox that serves as natural light source. If not a stadium, it may be space (viewing deck on space station?), which also gives good excuse to put windows throughout side corridors with views to something far-reaching and massive like space docks, huge hangar filled with lots of UT vehicles or just empty space. There could be so many things better than claustrophobic "50 shades of grey" corridors. We need to have more levels with incredible backgrounds like Outpost23, but with even simpler meshes and textures.

Couldn't agree more with what rAge said - Deck's geometry is sacred, don't change it that much and don't put doors there please.

I think we really should be done with the old deck layout already. If it's still bascially a meshed version of the original Unreal/UT99, it starts to feel really old by now. As long the gameplay is good, I wouldn't mind an updated layout.

                              Current version is pure BSP
