Post for UT99 Ports as Next Event

Metalfist came with the idea of holding another UT99 Classics Event in the near future.
The only prerequisites are that it looks, sounds and plays exactly the same as the original from UT99 (or as close as possible) using the exact same brushes, textures, audio, so an exact port, resulting in the final gameplay we all loved in UT99.
Metalfist would love it if volunteers would help out with porting UT99 and Unreal maps to extend the server maplist.
If you know how the Unreal Tournament 4 Editor works and want to help make maps for this event then please contact Metalfist on the forums here by private message or post in this topic.
You can port the maps using the Utility available here: https://www.epicgames.com/unrealtour...7-3-18-06-2016
To view the DM and CTF maps from UT99 to refresh your memory visit the wiki: https://liandri.beyondunreal.com/Unreal_Tournament (excluding PS2 editions) and for Unreal https://liandri.beyondunreal.com/Unreal
Please let us know what map(s) you would like to see ported first.

So why not just play UT99? At this point in time the only difference between 99 and UT4 is going to be that hit detection is far worse and the weapons arent balanced properly. Also I do think these throw back weekends are a good idea, but you shouldnt limit it just to UT99. We are trying to grow the community and bring more people in, the next one should be a UT2K4 event. Even though you dont enjoy that one as much as 99, the more players you bring in, the better and bigger the events will be and the better the all around experience will be.

Does Unreal 1 MP maps counts as well?

If that so, I'd like to see DmRetrospective and DmBeyondTheSun ported to here (with better graphics of course )
They were bundled with the 227 patch (OldUnreal edition)

Since the title say "UT99 ports" I don't think Unreal maps counts in this event.

It is nice to see such events proposed, but the obligation to do a 1:1 port that looks exactly the same as in UT99 is kind of too restrictive in my opinion. Plus I'm not certain it will fit with UT4 since there's different changes with the movements, the scale, etc... Also, considering all the paint and texture tools we got today, a map using so few details as UT99 will look a little... bland or lackluster. It was amazing in 1999, but today standards have changed.

You know that most of Unreal 1 MP maps are playable also in UT99...

Yes I know. But "most" doesn't mean "all".
What I mean is that if it eventually was a Unreal map that was officially ported in UT99, then you probably can. However if it is only present in Unreal and not in UT99 then you'll probably won't be allowed.
Now I'm not the one organizing the event, I'm only making assumptions, so it would be better to have a word from the host (Metalfist I suppose ?).

Unreal maps are also allowed as those are classics as well!

This sound good ! Moreover there are some maps created for UT99 for Playstation2 and never seen on PC it could be really cool to bring back those "new-old" map too !

In addition to the previous maps I've suggested, there are a couple of maps that I'd love to see them here:

                    DmDeathFan (Unreal)
                    DM-Hyperblast
                    DM-Agony
                    CTF-LavaGiant
                    CTF-November
                    CTF-Command

The "looks, sounds, and plays exactly" prerequisite makes me wonder about how some of the UED2 features like the rippling water textures (aka WaterPaint textures), the emulated particle textures used for fire and lightning effects (aka FirePaint textures), and the fake "3D" skybox could be remade in UE4.

I mean, I'd imagine that the water textures and skyboxes would be easier to recreate. You could probably make a blueprint for capturing the surrounding area as sort of a camera for the skybox and a material to apply the skybox on surfaces, and I already kinda figured out how make textures distort in a somewhat similar fashion to the distorting water in the original game. I can't really imagine how one would go about recreating the emulated particle textures, though.

Skybox shouldn't be a problem. You can just upscale the original stuff or edit it slightly like the bsp circle of the earth can just be a sheet + masked material. For a rotating skybox I used blueprint.
Waterpaint textures etc. can't be ported, but you can port the original texture and try to apply a similar effect to it. As for torches that are using an animated texture + sheets, it is perfectly fine to just place a particle system.
Warp zones are another thing that might be a problem if you want to achieve a perfect and seamless transition, but we totally understand there are some limitations!

As for PS2 titles, I found that this topic: http://hooksutplace.freeforums.org/h...ike-t2247.html has PS2 maps that can be loaded into the PC version of UT99. So from there it is possible to port them over.

A map Ported by Metalfist --> Original Creator: Dave Ewing.
                          Description:
A map set on the top of three very high towers with extremely low gravity. These three towers are the Northwest tower, the Northeast tower, and the South tower. In terms of height, the Northwest tower is the taller one, while the Northeast tower is the shortest one, and the South one is in the middle.

Individually, each tower has the same elements: an inner chamber, accessible via a ramp from that tower's mid level, an upper platform also accessible by a ramp from the mid level, and a minitower at the very top, each holding a powerful item.

There's also, in the lowest level of the map, a broken road, with a small platform between the Northwest and South tower, holding no item. This road also has a jumppad propulsing the players back to the towers. (source)
