    Description
Gothic is a remastering of the classic UT99 map. This is not a straight port, but an overhaul. It’s our intention to bring this map into the new age with high quality textures, models, and gameplay adjustments tailored for UT4.

    Who We Are
Gothic’s revival is being taken on by a two man team. Corey ‘Kyben’ Sine and Micah ‘IrishKilter Parker. Together they are collaborating to bring Gothic (and perhaps more) to Epic standards in hopes of contributing to the next generation of Unreal Tournament.

    Current Status - Phase One
In this early stage, we simply have converted the original BSP into a set of static mesh shells and altered the geometry slightly to fit to the new scale and gameplay of UT4. We’re currently testing gameplay, and appreciate any feedback from the community on the feel of the map before we proceed to the next stage of updating the visuals of the map.

Here is what we have planned for the future:

Hope you guys enjoy the map!

      Hey guys,

Just wanted to share what we've been up to this week. I've started meshing the map and placed static lighting throughout. At this phase, I'm playing around, trying to come up with a good look that I can expand throughout the rest of the map. There are a couple things I'm looking at and planning for:

Memory and map size are important to keep low. I'm looking into what UT4 assets we can use and what must be custom. Ideally, I'd like to keep the file size below 200mb, which doesn't give us much room. Lightmaps and our textures will be the biggest hit, but we will optimize as best as possible.

UT99 Gothic had great atmosphere, which we'd like to capture. It's a balance between keeping that dark, gritty, alien world ambience while also providing the clarity players expect. Lighting and our texture work will be put to the test during this phase.

Of course, everything shown is still WIP and will be modified, but it's a good start. Any feedback is appreciated, and thanks for reading!

The purple atmosphere is AMAZING!!! Great job! I'd add a nice bluish moon into the skybox, too.

Current work on the interior. Pillars were hidden for a better view of the room.

The windows on the left look into part of the map where the pulse rifle is placed. This wasn't a problem in UT99 with how skyboxes worked. Our options were to add a brick wall to look at through the window, or block it off completely. For now we've blocked it off, but we may come back to it later and add something more interesting.

Once again, thanks guys! Happy Halloween!

Niceness is sharing your works with us to play on Kyben!
I don't want to be the bringer of bad news but this map (along with alot more) is being reworked on by another community member (MoxNix). You can find these on zunnie's network, as shown here.
            Thanks again for the map!

                Hey DutchSmoke,

We are aware UT99 maps have been ported to UT4 multiple times. Code187 and MoxNix both did great jobs with Gothic and we've checked them out.

Irishkilter and I enjoyed being a part of the UT99 community and the Killing Floor community long ago. We kinda miss those days and wanted to get back into it with UT4. This map is mainly for sharpen our skills, wading in the shallow before jumping into the deep end with our own map, but mostly for fun. There is a lot more work in making maps now, so we want to get it right.

Thanks code, rap, dutch, and archer for the kind words!

                Cheers,
                Corey

Mate your doing a way better job then i ever did, keep it up. The more versions of the same maps the better IMO.

I figured I'd chime in since I haven't said anything yet. While I agree that the other versions of Gothic are just as fun to play, they still have that distinct "this is a UT99" map feel. While that's great, I know I'm personally hoping to give this classic map a real home in the UT4 lineup. We've done a lot of discussing to determine how best to keep the original spirit of the map whole, while making it feel like it belongs in the current generation.

As Kyben stated, this is mostly a good way to introduce ourselves into the UT4 community and see what people think of our work. The two of us have known each other for a long time, since way back in the UT2k4 modding days. We've always had fun working together, and we really hope you guys get something Epic in our decision to bring back the glory that is the Unreal Tournament series.

Looks awesome. Gothic is one of my favourite UT maps.
The new UT is coming along nicely...
Maybe a new Unreal would be a good idea for Epic's next project? It's certainly somewhat overdue...
