    [PROTOTYPE] DM-TropicalTower

    Hi guys !

I've never made a map before and I'm kinda new to Unreal Engine so this project is more of a learning experiance for me.
Tips and critiques are super welcome - you can be cruel, I can take it .. i think .. I hope @_@ !

I started with something rather small. I'm still learning how to use BSPs - they bug-out so often! I don't know how you guys can create such a complex levels with them :S.
I didn't decided on the art style yet. I'm not sure if I should go with some medieval castle style or sci-fi.

      Question to map makers ...

Do you guys create terrain using bsp's or landscape editor ( or in some other way ) ?
Is it possible to create two landscapes - one for the walkable area and 2nd as a background decoration ?

I use the landscape editor if im gonna use terrain. If you want to get complex you can use a third party program and import/export heightmaps. Otherwise the landscape editor works just fine.

Yes I believe you can use two landscapes. Background decoration might be nice to make/convert to a static mesh once you have it the way you like it.

        Hope this helps!

              Thanks

Here's a little recording of a match with bots . I'm kinda out of form so it might be painful to watch.

Bots are getting stuck in few places. That's the first thing I'm going to fix.

Your map feels better in the paintover. Try to chase that.
Also, make sure you don't bump in to ledges on main pathways. If it's not done deliberately it's bad. That's mostly the case.

Gotta sleep, will give more feedback soon.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it !
I'm gonna work on fixing those problems.

I didn't try to match the paintover yet. I want the map layout to be playabe/semi-fun first. After that I will start adding details and play with the lighting . I hope that's the right oder of doing things :P. I know that light can play a big role in how the map plays - they can help player to navigate through the level and highlight interesting locations ( they can also completely destroy it, but that's a different story >.> ).

I needed to take a break from BSPs so I've made a simple background terrain just to give this location more personality and scale

Yeah, I mean, the paintover seems playable, but the map itself not yet.

Nice background terrain btw. Things like that sell maps to me.

                          Ow, I see .

                          And thanks

Btw. Is there a way to remove terrain from all those texture/lighting/navigation compilations ? I would like to reduce my build time to minimum.

small update. I had to recreate the entire BSP in external 3D app =.=

I'm trying to break the symmetry, add extra spaces, ways to navigate and things to hide behind.

I have few question to more experianced map designers/ players

                            1. What's the most valuable item (weapon/powerup/health pack) in the game that you will risk your (virtual) life for ?
                            2. Do you think players should get well rewarder ( big health pack ) for reaching locations accessible only with trick (dodge?) jumps ?
                            3. In a multilevel map ( 1-3 floors with good visibility ) do players at the higher floor have big advantage over those located below them ? should I put stronger pickups at the bottom to compensate for that disadvantage ?

                              Small update video

I feel like there's too many medium heal pack at the top - I will probably reduce their number in next update. I will also put some extra ammo packs around the map.
There are some slopes/ledges/holes that I have to fix and there's also nothing stopping players from rocketjumping their way outside of the gameplay area.

I also have plans to redesign the main tower - or at least the middle and top part of it.

I would really welcome any extra tips and critique

I will upload the level as soon as I fix those mentioned problems .. If anyone is actually interested in testing the map that is :S.
