Context music (Main Menu, Loading screen, Post Match, Flag Capture..... )

    Hey,

I’ve spent the last couple days working on some non map related music for UT. I came up with several cues and also revisited the UT 99 Menu theme.
I'd love to get some constructive feedback =)

    Menu Music

My own rendition of the Menu Music, also includes the Loading Screen Cue. Pretty new twist on the whole Menu Music.

Main Theme Remake (composed by Alexander Brandon, I think ? Epic Help! :P)

    (loopable)
    updated Version:
    https://soundcloud.com/fjcomposer/ut...pdated/s-Y1xMG

It's basically the UT99 Menu music, with current samples and a little bit more percussion and some other ornaments. In my opinion the 99 Theme is, even though it's old, still very very effective in its own kind of way. I tried to keep the spirit as it was in 99.

The loading screen music is suitable to the menu music, it builds up tension and is engaging. It’s a bit long, but if someone plays on a potato it can last long enough.
edit: added synesizer, drumkit @ 0:28.

Please tell me which version you prefer most, It’s kind of hard to find the right tone since there’s no official music I can rely on.

I’m not entirely sure what direction of music you are looking for, at least I hope I can give some guidance in that regard. I hope you enjoy it.

    Best regards : )

Nice remake of ut99 theme, however I think its very retro sounding. I think something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoYcjeHVbnI would fit with orchestra to create modern sounding song.
UT99 remake is not what everyone want, but a "remix" of ut99 version with new sounds, growls, basses, bit crusher, distorsion basses mixed with orchestra. Something like modern action sci fi movie themes.

I think the quality of these tracks and audio cues is great, but the emphasis on orchestra is too large. You should experiment a bit with electronic sounds.

Mixing electronic/synthesized stuff with orchestra can produce really cool results, a fantastic example of this is the following track in UT2004 which is a legendary remake of a UT99 track:

In the menu track I feel that the percussion stands out too much sometimes, you could make it either less sharp or just lower in volume (you might want to tweak the rhythm as well, it sounds a bit out of sync). Also, the sharp brass chord at and around 1:29 is simply too much, it could really do without or else you'll make it sound like some samba song. The rest of the track is excellent, and the build up before 1:54 almost gave me goosebumps

I would love to hear some tense electronic sounds in the loading screen theme though, right now it feels more as if I'm awaiting a big ww warzone rather than a futuristic arena, which would do for the correspondingly themed maps, but most of the time not.

The flag capture cues are quite long and don't really sound UT to me, I can't really explain why though, it's just a feeling, they feel to be more at home for message pop-ups in medieval city building games. Perhaps you need to make them less majestic and more aggressive, but I really can't give great feedback there, it's not my expertise, although you should try listening to the flag capture sounds of the other UT games or even other games and perhaps draw inspiration from those.

I love the remake of the UT theme and I do agree, that motif needs to come back in UT04. I am listening to your playlist on Soundcloud and I gather your background is mostly orchestral based? I love the arrangements! Overall I have a sense of calm and longing, which may work work. Personally I would like to hear more aggressive arrangements. It is refreshing to hear an orchestral take, most of what I have heard so far (although very amazing) are Drum and Bass type feel. Good work!

          Hey,

thanks for the feedback so far! Im entirely aware of the fact that the music isnt 100% UT'ish, there are many people in this forum that are good at electronic music and I just thought I try something different first .

Archer, you might be right with the brass chords in the menu theme, but that shouldnt be a problem to fix :P
Concerning the flag captures, it actually suprised me how the Flag capture cues where in the last UT's. I never really listened to them consciously, especially the one from '99 seemed off for the type of music that was going. The second flag capture cue is actually influenced by the '99 version :P

MaxCarnage: Im coming from orchestral background, but not entirely. I also like doing stuff that is not 100% orchestral:P Most of the stuff really is Drum n Bass, its not really my cup of tea, composing wise - the guys here do that much better than I could. Also im glad you like it

Im waiting for more feedback, thanks guys !

            Hey!
good job! i think that UT Theme Revisited and Loading Screen are OK!
i think that all three Flag Capture tracks are not too epic, be more aggressive in a few seconds, don't take it as an offence, the tracks are great! but don't fit well in UT.
Defeat Cue and Victory Cue the same as Flag Capture tracks, be more epic.

            Keep up the work!

The revisited menu and defeat cue are great, but I think everyone's gearing towards electro/dubstep themes for this game (I know I am!).

These would've fit better in UT2004.
Also, for the revisited menu theme, around the 1:20 mark, it's too dynamic. I'd suggest adding some more background instruments or compressing it.

I have to agree with Archer6621, I'm all up for orchestral soundtracks but when it comes to UT, part of what makes it so unique and awesome is the intricate mix between electronic/fast-paced music and orchestral/epic music. I think that you could definitely try to implement those elements in your own style, and it can create something great I'm sure!

                  Thanks,

I'm going to add some synths and make it a little bit more "UT"-ish. I post it here when Im done, thanks for the feedback !

As good as it is, I think it would have been a better remake if it weren't orchestral. I don't think those instruments belong in UT.

I disagree. I feel that UT2k4 and UT3 showed that orchestral instruments would fit nicely, however I feel that perhaps not as a foreground. I am liking the feel a bit better with this newer version! Keep up the good work.

Listening to the main theme (menu) right now, completely digging it! - Very nice mix of the original w/ a bit of the 2K4 sound added in.

Your heading the right direction, I would recommend to allow voting a several variations when make changes (and you will)

                          Keep it up!

On the loading screen music - definitely sounds like it belongs in Unreal Tournament. Especially upto around 30 seconds, it starts to fall off at around 34 seconds - whats the difference between the edited version and the original?

Also I know you put a lot of time into this & its appreciated, I'm not really feeling it on the post match, defeated, winner, & Flag capture sound cues. they feel too symphonic to fit UT, great quality here but not suiting UT, trying working with the 4 sounds from the original games and seeing if you can come up with variants / hybrids closer to those - I think you have the right stuff to accomplish this based on the Menu music and you nailed that quite well.

Again nice work, IMHO sound is very critical and often over looked because not everyone has a keen sense of sound or appreciation of its relevance to the experience.
