Thank you man. Your piece sounded pretty dang Unreal. I've actually been looking for feedback on my basic stuff. It isn't specifically for Unreal, but it's just WIP to test out some instruments and percussion pieces I have.

Good on you for trying something new man! I am not sure what you mean by "hybrid orchestral" Synth music with orchestral elements? If so I would say that is along the lines of what I am exploring. Will upload in a few.

Thanks. Can't wait to see your track.

Yeah, hybrid orchestral is basically orchestral mixed with another genre, like rock or electronic. I usually think of stuff like this:

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KJ93uxCIas
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT0hrTMc7WA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi3FaoaWCYE (not sure if this counts as there's not much of an orchestra)

But anyway, I really would love some form of orchestral in the new UT. I think hybrid would be pretty cohesive with the rest of the rock and electronic tracks.

Here are two tracks for submission.

            REV01 (Mix02)
            "The Score"
            https://soundcloud.com/john-m-repka/...-mix02/s-n6ox4

Got some inspiration from an old UT motif and slammed it with inspiration from NFL music cues. Bombastic, synths with some orchestral instruments.

            "The Recap"
            https://soundcloud.com/john-m-repka/...-recap/s-wLihp

Wanted to explore a bit more mellow approach. Seems more of a montage music feel to it. I can hear it playing over some hi lights of the match.

I do want to second Nick's idea of orchestral mixture for the music. Love making that kind of stuff. In the spirit of tournaments and leaning toward sport like feel, I think this would be an excellent direction. The trick of course is not go overboard either (a la Monday Night Combat).

Edit: Nuts, I forgot to add stingers. I will add to those in a bit. I was so excited to make these, I forgot! Stay tuned.

The first one is really awesome (The Score), it has some bits in it that I don't entirely agree with though but overall it's a fine piece of work with an especially strong beginning. I think the direction it took from 0:11 on is a bit too... I don't exactly know how to call it, I'd say retro as in mario-ish. I mean, honestly, you nailed the rhythm and the flow from 0:00 to 0:11, and it got a bit weaker after 0:11. The ending after 0:22 is not too bad either, maybe a bit too squeaky but that's not an issue

Would be awesome if you made a version where you kept 0:11-0:22 in the same vein as 0:00-0:11

I took a listen and I think I know what you mean by "retro." I can try a different synth texture, or just bring up the Viola and Violins a bit more. Thanks for the input bud! Also, I am a fan of Two Steps from Hell as well. Their music is oh so epic.

I was going to say the same thing; it's a arcadey. It's also more upbeat, almost whimsical than I would like, but that's the direction UT4's music seems to be going in. I think it's exactly what Epic is looking for. You definitely did a great job with both tracks.

I feel like we're stuck in the past though. I think hybrid orchestral is where UT would be at if it was allowed to evolve. We can still keep some of the classic synthy sounds, but I think we need that bombastic orchestra with it. Like Carnage said, it's a tournament.

Here's another quick sketch I came up:

                    https://soundcloud.com/nicholas-damato/1-hp

Maybe it could be a defeat stinger. Obviously, it needs work but I wanted to know what people thought of the general idea. Leaning more towards the orchestral side this time.
Hybrid orchestral is pretty much the UT2004 soundtrack, best example I can think of was Hyperblast Redux:

So here's the hybrid orchestra one, although this was more a proof of concept, I'm aware the 'winner feeling' isn't very strong in this one, will try something with more variation and a different harmony sequence later when I got time: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ctory_orch.mp3

Yeah, 2k4 did have quite a bit of hybrid orchestral now that I think of it. It sounds pretty outdated though, which was what I was kind of getting at. Modern hybrid music would suit UT4 well I think.

I disagree, it does have a winner feeling. It's dark and gritty. I really like it. I know most of us aren't going to be hiring orchestras, but the strings sound synthetic. Other than that, it sounds like UT to me.

I could work on that, it's more a matter of tuning the envelopes and note velocities I hope, but the actual samples are from a free library played through Alchemy VSTi: http://sso.mattiaswestlund.net/

Will probably post more somewhere next week

I think you guys are on to something here. The pacing and the melodies maybe important, but in this case I think the sound sets we use are going to be a big determining factor. the synths and sounds used in UT99 and even UT2004 sound outdated and certainly a a few composers here strive to get that sound back, but it's hard to not sound dated doing so. I feel like in this version of the UT, everything is polished (based on what Outpost-23 looks like), and clean, and precise. Manufactured and refined, a controlled chaos. A stark contrast from the previous UT games and I feel that the music and sound effects should reflect that. Now, how does that sound? I am not sure yet. I am hoping that by all of us submitting these short pieces we can start seeing elements of that. I can't wait to see what others come up with as well.

Here is another sketch. It's far better than my previous two. I spent more time on it.

                              https://soundcloud.com/nicholas-damato/crimson-victory

It's has a bit of the UT theme in it. Lately I've been digging harmonic minor/raised 7ths. It's dark, but I really like that feel. Since the game is about blowing people's heads off, maybe it won't be too out of place. Let me know what you think. I will keep working on it if people like it.

Archer, I have Hollywood Strings. If you want to send me your strings midi file(s), I can try using my samples and sending you .wavs to use in your piece.

Definitely not in-line with impression I'm getting of what people think UT should sound like but for a "personal theme" should it even matter?
