    Add classes to UT4 ?

Quake champions will have classes. Each champions will have a special power. Translocation, wall hack, bull attack ...

I personnally think it is a great idea to give fresh air to FPS without impacting the core gameplay, it will be basically Quake3 plus classes.

Explanation of Tim Willits, head of project.

UT dev should think about that.

What is proposed is only to have an additional power. Every players can hold every weapons. It is not class like ow.

What UT needs is to proposed something really new. Slide and multi wall dodge are not enough for me.

There I see a problem. IMO classes do impact the core gameplay, it totally changes the whole decision making for every move.
Of course we do not want a class system for UT and if, then only as mutator for fun gamemodes when the game is already polished.
How about we try to fill a non existent market first - modern arena shooters?

Part of what makes UT special at a high level is the freedom you have to define your own play style. You essentially create your own class solely by the way you play the game.

yeah while this can be fun, it should be a mod rather than stock gameplay. If I wanted to play a class-based fps I would go play _______

I'm not keen on the idea of classes, but I would like to see some customization in the game, perhaps in the form of 'modifiers' that boosted some of your stats but nerfed other ones as a tradeoff. The game could let you activate up to 2 or 3 modifiers (which would be unlocked by leveling up) similar to these ones:
                  • +10% Speed | -10 Health
                  • +25 Starting Armor | -10% Firing Rate
                  • +50% Faster Weapon Switch | -10% Speed
                  • +10% Splash Resistance | -10% Hitscan Resistance

While this would definitely make the game more complex and different from the core UT game we're used to, I see lots of people every day in the forums asking for the game to be balanced the way they personally like the most, so I'm starting to think that adding some customization features would be the only way to make everyone happy...

Some more crazy examples could be worth exploring too, giving really good benefits at a huge cost:
                  • +Dodge Jump | -25 Health
                  • Deals 1.5 Damage | Receives 1.5 Damage
                  • Invisible when Crouching | Dies instantly if hit as invisible

As a mod or variant of UT RPG - cool. As a core game feature - nononononono...

Street fighters, Mario kart, FIFA... In all these games, characters have special skills ...

I just try to push the idea cause the problem I see is that UT4 has been in pre alpha for 2 years now and no viral effect.... We are like 200 playing the game (well before summer holidays and this latest build)

Well at least we could benefit from quake champions regarding classes. 2017 will be very interesting for fps.

This idea would fit well with an objective-based game mode. Loadouts too.

A game mode with these sorts of elements would have the highest chance of still being FUN and competitive while being able to draw in new players...LOTS of players.

Adding stuff like this to the game also provides an avenue for player progression.

what about classes is contradictory to skill?

tribes, a series with a much wider skill gap than unreal, has loadouts (which are essentially classes). The game wouldn't have a fraction of its depth without a loadout system.

On topic, classes or something like it I think would clearly be the best design choice from a purely game design point of view, but implementing stuff like that now is clearly not in the cards.

If classes are added, I'd prefer they were added as a mod. One of the top reasons I like UT is because we're all on an even playing field. No, classes don't always mean less skill, but at some point, no matter how much better you are than your opponent, you'll lose to comp/class. It adds randomness to the game, which is not skill. It softens the skillcap. It's the #1 most aggravating mechanic I can think of, followed only by gibby bull****.
