Two-factor authentication and how to enable it
Why is it important to enable 2FA?
We highly recommend enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) because:
2FA increases the security of your account. Even if somebody guesses your
password, they won’t be able to access your account.
- 2FA is required for claiming some free games on the Epic Games Store.
2FA is required to send and receive gifts in Fortnite. Both the sender and
the receiver must have 2FA enabled.
- 2FA is required for participation in Fortnite competitive events.

What exactly is 2FA?
2FA is an optional sign-in feature that provides additional security for your
If you decide to enable 2FA, each time you sign in using your password,
you’ll receive a one-time security code that’s available for a
short period of time.
The security code will be sent to you through the verification method that
you selected in your account settings.
Currently, 2FA security codes can be received through either an
authentication app, the email address on your Epic Games account or SMS to
your mobile device.
- You can’t have more than one 2FA method enabled.
When you sign in, you’ll be asked to enter the security code from the
2FA method you selected (email, app or SMS). After you enter the code,
you’ll be signed in to your account.
You’ll be prompted for a 2FA security code in the following situations:
- The first time you sign in after enabling the feature
- If you sign in using a new device
- If it’s been over 30 days since you last signed in
- If you recently cleared your browser cookies
NOTE: The email address associated with your Epic Games
account must be verified before you can enable this feature.
How do I enable 2FA?
Go to the
Click the PASSWORD & SECURITY tab.
Under the TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION header, click the 2FA option you want to
enable: ENABLE AUTHENTICATOR APP,
ENABLE SMS AUTHENTICATION or
ENABLE EMAIL AUTHENTICATION.
If you opt to use an authenticator app for 2FA, these common authenticator
apps can be found in your mobile device app store:
- Google Authenticator
- LastPass Authenticator
- Microsoft Authenticator
