Two-factor authentication (2FA) and how to enable it
If you are a child and your parent hasn't helped you set up your account, you may have a Cabined Account with different features. Visit this page (Opens in a new tab) if you think you might have a Cabined Account to learn more.
Why is it important to enable 2FA?
We highly recommend enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) for the following reasons:
- 2FA increases the security of your account. Even if somebody guesses your password, they won’t be able to access your account.
- 2FA is required to claim some free games on the Epic Games Store.
- 2FA is required to send gifts in Fortnite.
- 2FA is required for participation in Fortnite competitive events such as the Fortnite World Cup.
Since your account security is a priority for us, we also give players rewards for enabling 2FA. You can check them out here. For more information about what you can do to secure your account, please see our Account Security News post. (Opens in a new tab)
How do I enable 2FA?
- Go to the Password and security (Opens in a new tab) section in your Epic Games account.
- Under the Two-Factor Authentication section, click Set up to enable your preferred 2FA method. For a list of available options, refer to What two-factor authentication methods are available to use with my Epic Games account?
- You will be asked to input a code. Input the code you received via email, SMS, or in the authenticator app, depending on the method you chose. Once complete, you will receive a success message on the website, as well as in your email.
- Your account will be updated to confirm that the authentication method is active.
If you use more than one authentication method, set your preferred one as primary by clicking the three dots (…) next to it and selecting Make my primary 2FA method.
