Two-factor authentication (2FA) and how to enable it
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second step when you sign in, so even if someone learns your password, they still can't get into your account.
Why enable 2FA?
- It keeps your account secure. Even if someone guesses your password, they can't sign in without your second factor.
- It's required to claim some free games on the Epic Games Store.
- It's required to send gifts in Fortnite.
- It's required to take part in Fortnite competitive events.
How to enable 2FA
- Go to the Password and security (Opens in a new tab) section of your Epic Games account.
- Under Two-Factor Authentication, click Set up for your preferred method.
For the available options, refer to What two-factor authentication (2FA) methods are available to use with my Epic Games account? - Enter the code sent to you by email, SMS, or your authenticator app, depending on the method you chose.
- Your account updates to confirm the method is active, and you receive a confirmation email.
If you use more than one method, set your preferred one as primary by clicking the three dots (…) next to it and selecting Make my primary 2FA method.
Note: If you are a child and your parent hasn't helped set up your account, you may have a Cabined Account with different features. Refer to Cabined Accounts (Opens in a new tab) to learn more.
If you don't receive your code or hit an error during setup:
- Email codes: I don't receive two-factor authentication codes in my email
- SMS codes: Why am I not receiving Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) codes via SMS?
- Setup error: I'm getting the 'An error occurred in our internal service. Please try again in a few minutes' error when trying to set up Two-factor authentication (2FA)
